Findings from international studies show that Australian students continue to be out-performed on mathematics tests by their peers in many other countries. As well, a portion of Australian students present with mathematics difficulties and mathematics learning disabilities in schools. Often these difficulties remain unaddressed. Sadly, the lack of a solid mathematics foundation prevents successful performance in higher-level mathematics courses, such as algebra, and can contribute to lifelong difficulties in employment and meeting the demands of daily life.

Given the difficulties students with maths difficulties and mathematics learning disabilities have in learning maths, evidence based interventions are needed to promote understanding and accuracy with whole-number operations, rational numbers, and mathematical problem solving. These interventions must be linkedback to the curriculum to ensure that students experience success.
