Student Volunteer Opportunity 2024

Gameplan is currently looking for student volunteers to support our 2024 social skills programs by becoming ‘PEERS Coaches’! We have volunteer positions available in 2024 (TBC).

PEERS for Adolescents and PEERS for Young Adults are 16-week evidence-based social emotional learning programs for motivated teens and YAs who are interested in learning new ways of making and keeping friends. This internationally acclaimed program, used in over 35 countries, was originally developed at UCLA by Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson.

We are on the lookout for passionate volunteers with a keen interest in evidence-based practice who want to learn more about delivering high quality group, online programs to incorporate into their practice. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from highly experienced professionals in their field and would be suitable for allied health (OT, SLP, Psych) and education students!

The Role:

Volunteers will be working with secondary aged students, young adults and their parent/care-givers in a group setting online. The sessions are highly engaging and fun for all involved! Volunteers will help to develop teens and YAs abilities to make and keep friends; start, end and maintain two-way conversations; manage peer conflict and learn about the oft-times confusing social world.

You will receive lots of training and supervision that will help prepare you for your professional working life as an allied health or education professional! You will be trained to become a ‘PEERS Coach’ during the online sessions. As well, you have the opportunity to develop rapport with the clients and families and play a critical role in their success throughout the program.

We need your help with the following important duties to help our program run smoothly:

  1. Participate in a 1hr online weekly planning meeting where you’ll assist in the preparation of the online session and troubleshoot any problems from previous weeks.

  2. Participate in a 90mins weekly online teen/YA or parent program sessions, assisting with break-out rooms and taking observational notes to inform progress notes. You will also relay any problems to the supervising allied health professional to help ensure a safe environment.

  3. Complete approximately 30minutes weekly administration tasks including reviewing resources for session and writing observations notes using a structured template.

Your involvement 3hrs per week!

You will receive training prior to the beginning of the program and ongoing weekly support from highly experienced supervisors who will help you to develop your skills in working with adolescents and young adults. Students enrolled in Speech Pathology, OT, Psychology and teaching courses will find this program hugely beneficial for professional practice. Supervisors will gladly provide you with references for future work opportunities on successful completion of the program.
